CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Aug. 6— The small Safety Valves valve that halted the firing of the space shuttle Discovery's main rocket engines was being removed today to prepare the craft for another attempt at the test, which could come as early as the middle of next week. A replacement hydrogen valve was flown in from the space agency's engine facility in Mississippi. The work is proceeding round the clock with three shifts of mechanics. The task is time-consuming because a maze of structures, pipes, wiring and other materials must be moved out of the way in the cramped aft section of the orbiter before workers from the maker of the engine, Rocketdyne, can gain access to the Balance Valves faulty valve. When the new valve is installed, all the piping and other materials will have to be replaced and work scaffolding removed.
